Connecting Students with Plant Science Professionals

For the past year, Seed Your Future has brought together businesses and educators to show students the diverse and exciting careers that await them in the green industry. We know that the industry has a wide range of careers working with plants that would interest students of all ages and we want to spread the word. The plant industry needs growers and scientists, but they also need marketers, software developers, and more than we can list in this blog post!Transparent_logo_Final.png

In fall 2022 47 organizations participated in the inaugural Green Career Week where they either shared their experiences on social media, visited a classroom to discuss what it’s like to work in the industry, or scheduled a field trip with a local school to give them some hands-on learning!  In spring 2023, that number jumped up to 72!  Plenty of our partners showcased the unique careers that await students at their company, like Product Development Manager at Ball Horticultural Company, Senior Horticulturist at Longwood GardensDepartment Head of Plant Health at Bailey Nurseries or shared professional insight like the CEO of Details Flowers Software!

"I think it’s going to be essential for our industry to engage this next generation, whether it’s high school or college, because to keep us fresh, to keep us thriving as an industry, we need that young talent,” said Alyson Upshaw, social media manager at Ball Horticultural Company.

To increase visibility for Green Career Week, Seed Your Future Executive Director Jazmin Albarran conducted a radio media tour, participating in seven national and regional interviews to help spread the word about the benefits, variety, and value of green careers. In total, the tour generated 22 interview broadcasts that reached over 900,000 online viewers and radio listeners across the U.S.

In fall 2023, our goal is to help connect 150 organizations and educators to bring the joy of working with plants to even more students across the country!
